I. What is a Prophet?
The Prophetic Office is one of five dimensions/offices in God that He makes available to His children for the express purpose of us getting to know Him, and for us to grow up into the Body of Christ in its fullness. As it is written:
Ephesians 4:11-16 (NKJV)
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
I Corinthians 12:28 (KJV)
And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
A prophet is not:
1. A psychic
2. A palm reader
3. A tarot card reader
You will also often find that prophets have quirky, offbeat personalities. This is on purpose and is a gift from God. Why? Because God forces prophets out of the mainstream. We will never sit at the cool kids table because God calls us to cry out against it. To follow God requires a single-minded and committed determination. To follow God requires a cross. To follow God requires you to kill your fear of man, and God trains His prophets precisely in this way. That’s why you often find passionate but socially non-mainstream people called to the office of a prophet. So if any of this describes you, take heart. You’re supposed to be different. God has marked you, and you will never fit in with the crowd.
So stop trying.
